The sale of the Machine Knife Division
enables Spear and Jackson International to focus on core business activities
and in particular the manufacture and supply of Hot and Friction saw blades
to the World Steel Industry.
Orders for 2008 include significant
blade contracts to several major steel section producers in Countries as
diverse as Saudi Arabia, USA, Italy, China and Norway. Spear and Jackson
International continue to enjoy the position as leading manufacturer of
Steel Mill Blades and associated machinery.
February 2007
The company moves into 2007 with a bulging order book across the product range, particularly for hot and friction saws.
With the World Steel Industry booming, Spear and Jackson International are producing blades destined for export to countries including America (North and South) Scandanavia, Italy, Germany, Holland, Turkey, Thailand and perhaps most significantly to China where the company is now recognised as preferred hotsaw supplier to several new steel section mills currently coming on stream.
Along with Sawblade sales the company has also been successful in specifying and supplying new repair equipment including the dedicated Powergrinder and Powerflame machines to several steel section mills, particular cases including Turkish and Finnish mills.
Carbide and segmental circular saws continue to complement a balanced product range, steel cutting carbide in particular remains a growth area and whilst segmental work will decline over time we enjoy the majority of the UK market in this niche product range.
Our Machine Knife Division is also enjoying considerable success. Under the leadership of Peter Jones, 2007 will see the first full year of total concentration on straight knife production/service. Last year's decision to withdraw from circular work was not taken lightly but the reduction in associated costs coupled with investment in machinery and new skills has enabled a much more efficient operation with a proven ability to respond to customer requirements particularly in terms of swift delivery commitment.
In April the company is attending the major American recycling exposition, ISRI, in New Orleans where associated sales development work with key industry players is continuing to pay dividends.
Our Bandsaw operation goes from strength to strength, Alan Blythe and his team continue to make inroads into many key UK contracts, with product support from the major blade manufacturers, particularly Lenox and Do-All, we are able to offer the highest specifications at very competitive prices. The newer carbide blades are offering many opportunities to "revolutionise" cutting performance and even for these specialist products we are able to supply within a maximum 7 days.
2007 will see significant capital investments for Spear and Jackson International Ltd who are in many ways bucking the trend of decline in UK industry. Exporting is seen as the key to our continuing success and growth is the target rather than accepting the stagnation that plagues much of our competition, we also take this opportunity to thank South Yorkshire International Trade Centre for their invaluable assistance in supporting our export marketing effort.
June 2005
The Company is delighted to announce the acquisition of 2 Sheffield based saw businesses, Saw Specialists of Roman Ridge Road and European Saw Services of Riverside Court, these 2 companies are both involved in circular saws and bandsaw blades.
The combination of the 3 companies will consolidate Spear and Jackson International's position as the largest European industrial cutting tool supplier specialising in sales service and repair of :
- Hot and friction saws
- Segmental saw blades
- Tungsten carbide saw blades
- High Speed Steel saw blades
- Bandsaw blades
- Shear blades and machine knives
All company operations will be conducted under the Spear and Jackson International Ltd name, the company will operate from 3 Sheffield sites - Atlas North, Riverside Court and Brightside Lane. The Roman Ridge Road site was vacated by the company during May. The machinery and direct employees from Saw Specialists have been relocated at the Atlas factory.
Former Saw Specialists and European Saw sales staff are now working alongside the existing Spear and Jackson International employees based at the Atlas works.
The amalgamation of these companies will allow concentration of effort in key areas, in particular the additional resources from Saw Specialists will allow the creation of a centre of excellence for tungsten carbide tipped circular blades in both new blade production and service and repair to customers across the UK and mainland Europe. Based at Atlas this will incorporate highest quality machining resources, including the Vollmer service centre, staffed by highly trained and experienced employees.
The concentration of bandsaw loop production facilities taken from the 3 companies and newly based at Riverside Court will allow significant developments in the presentation of a complete range of bandsaw specifications across all industries.
The company has invested heavily in new technology for production of machine knives and continues to dominate the World market in the supply of steel cutting Hotsaw blades with a full order book for blades from steel mill customers in many countries including China, Korea, United States, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Germany, Thailand...
With skilled employees numbering 120 and with first class technology in place, Spear and Jackson International Ltd has entered the 21st century with the intention of remaining the UK leading supplier of cutting tools, repair service and associated equipment.
News From 2004
The Company is finalising installation and commissioning of new equipment at both Sheffield sites including manufacturing machinery and computer systems.
A new stand alone computer system gives the final break from our previous holding Company with a new server and PC's giving a complete in-house production, sales and financial system and also enabling an inter-Company communication facility incorporating CAD/CAM and allied technologies.
A newly acquired Wire Eroding Machine is now in full production giving the Company considerable advantages in the efficient production of complex Knives and Cutters. Blades of intricate design can now be in-house machined to exacting tolerances, this has enabled many existing products to be produced to higher quality standards and has also enabled the Company to provide blades previously beyond conventional machine capability.
CNC Machining Centre and Lathe equipment have been installed at our Brightside Lane machine Knife Division and are now in full production operated by skilled staff newly recruited to the Company. These have enabled many improvements in both efficiency and output giving the Company added opportunities to increase market share and to enter new markets.
The implementation of this new technology has coincided with the employment of David Moran formerly of Copley Cutting equipment, Rochdale. David's appointment as Technical Sales Engineer has enabled Spear and Jackson International to enter as major supplier to this industry with a full portfolio of products, David has brought to Spear and Jackson International a wealth of experience in Knife application and manufacture for the paper converting industry. This was the final addition to what has now made Spear and Jackson International the only UK Company able to offer the complete range of blades for all applications.
This investment in new technology has been supported with Enterprise Grant Funding as part of the South Yorkshire Regeneration in manufacturing.
During the first quarter of 2004, Spear and Jackson International have been awarded several major supply contracts for Hotsaw products, in particular these include contracts as sole blade supplier for 2 new steel mills in China. With the first blades due for delivery in Summer 2004 these contracts help seal the growing relationship between Spear and Jackson International and China, the World's emerging leading Steel producer.
2004 is already set to become the most successful year since the Management buyout, the Company has a full order book across all products and with new technology and employing more skilled staff is now established as a leading UK supplier of Industrial Cutting products.
